Summers are always busy for Student Pastors. We go from mission trips to summer camps to swimming in a lot of different pools. When I wrote this, I was sitting in the auditorium of Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee for CIY camp. But, by the time you read this, it will be fall and I will be in Wyoming hunting in the woods!
I wanted to share with you an experience I had during this summer with a group of 100 or so men. It’s called Tres Dias. The one I attended took place in North Georgia, but these events happen all over the world.
I went into the weekend thinking I was going to have this incredible spiritual breakthrough, or this moment where God would rip away areas of struggle in my life. While this happened for most men at this retreat, God said and did something different in me.
On the last day in a group discussion, through the Holy Spirit, God whispered, “Keith, you know exactly what you need to do. You don’t need a ‘Holy Cow’ moment, bro. You need to follow through and get deep into the process and quite putting it aside.” It wasn’t met with any tears; it was subtle and it was perfect.
2 Corinthians 4:16 says, “That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.” For the follower of Jesus, the process of maturing and growing in Christ, pursuing godliness and becoming holy, is an everyday thing. We know the areas of our lives we need to surrender and allow the Spirit to renew, yet we are the ones who forgo this process and ignore the self discipline required to be more like Christ.
Because we know that correcting drift in our lives is hard work, time consuming, and often painful.
At my Tres Dias weekend, I was reminded often of the cross and what Christ emptied out for me, so that He would enable me to be renewed day by day. I am thankful that in His grace, Christ has pursued me, and continues to pursue me. But now it’s time for me to step up to the plate and like a baseball player, “Keith, grip it and rip; let’s do this man! You know what you need to do.”
What area in your life are your holding back from God? Where are you ignoring the process? In what ways have you stalled out? You know what you need to… so do it. Stop sinning and do it!
