Where do your passions come from? Are you passionate about food, sports, your car? For some of us it revolves around our families. For others it may revolve around our extra curricular activities. Or perhaps for you it is your work. What are the things in life which make you excited?
I love good food. One could easily say it is a passion of mine; ask the other staff members. I enjoy recommending specialty food items they have to try. I have tasted and enjoyed the wonderful flavor, so I want others to experience it as well. I believe my passion for great tasting food can lead other people to a great experience. But, if my passion comes from the wrong place, then I end up just serving my self and my own lusts in life.
I may want you to try this incredible new entrée at the latest restaurant, but if my motivation is to make you like me, appreciate me, or herald me as the best connoisseur of food, well that isn’t God honoring. That is me living out of my fear of man. (see Proverbs 29:25, Matthew 10:28). Our passions should come out of living for God; out of our love for God.
Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. – 1 John 2:15-17
I can enjoy the food God has created and understand He loves us and cares for us, giving thanks to Him for every tasty morsel, or I can just make it about my pleasure.
One of my favorite verses says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8). I often say this when tasting a delicious food for the first time! Of course this verse is about more than food. When I experience any gift from God, do I allow it to further my understanding of how good God is?
My Passion comes from the right place when I take you to try something because I want to share the joy I have in understanding how good our God is to us. Let the passions in your life be driven by the love of God in you and your love for Him. And by all means, share those with others to show them how good God is!
