Surrendering My Heart to the Creator

This upcoming Sunday, June 4 we will sing what I think is one of the most aggressive songs you could sing to God. It was written by David Crowder and the title is Here’s My Heart Lord.  More than a song, it’s a prayer:

Here’s my heart Lord
Here’s my heart Lord
Here’s my heart Lord
Speak what is true

‘Cause I am found, I am Yours
I am loved, I’m made pure
I have life, I can breathe
I am healed, I am free

‘Cause You are strong, You are sure
You are life, You endure
You are good, always true
You are light breaking through

You are more than enough
You are here, You are love
You are hope, You are grace
You’re all I have, You’re everything

I just want to bust out singing this prayer to Abba Father!

This song leads me to two Psalms written by David that have had incredible influence and impact in my life. The first is Psalm 51 where we find David’s prayer of repentance after being caught in adultery.  I enjoy praying through this Psalm from The Message Paraphrase. Oh the places the Spirit has led me!

The second is Psalm 139:23-24, which says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart, test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”

Both these Psalms have murmurings of David Crowder’s song. I love being honest with the Lord, and I love seasons where I long for the Lord to speak into my heart. I believe that God wants to do this regularly, but often times sin distracts me from hearing clearly from the Lord.

Jesus said, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind” (Matthew 22:37). Our heart is the deep seat of emotion; it’s where we store up good or evil and it’s where the Lord wants to speak. The Lord speaks to our hearts when we are present with Him and willing to listen. The Lord is Light breaking through the hardness of our hearts in order to free us of the woundedness and pain we store there.

God is such a loving God.  He wants to move in you and pierce your heart with His eternal light, but He will not do so without permission. It seems so backwards to me to have to give my Creator permission, but the Lord is patient and loving and will not enter where He is not wanted.

Join me in praying this prayer so that you may be found, you may be loved and made pure, you may have life, and can breathe and be healed and walk in freedom!

Here’s my heart Lord, speak what is true.
