Don’t Worry: He Holds All Things Together

He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.Colossians 1:17

I remember reading this for the first time years ago and bearing down with a pen onto my Bible, underlining this sucker over and over and over. I was thinking, “That’s right, He, the brother, holds it all together!”

It makes me think of a message I heard from Louie Giglio years ago called “How Great is Our God.”  In short, he talks about a protein molecule called laminin. It is a molecule in the body that literally holds the body together; it’s the rebar (steel enforcing rod holding cement together) of the human body and it is shaped into image of a cross. Amazing, right?!! At the microscopic level of our body, a molecule in the image of a cross is holding us together. Jesus is literally holding our body together.

When Paul writes this, the fullness of his words are meant to be understood that Christ has total sovereignty and control over all creation. Much like His working in our body, Christ sustains it and keeps creation from falling apart. I am reminded of the words of Jesus in John 16:33; “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” Jesus speaks peace into trouble, speaks strength into weakness, and speaks hope into despair. He sustains when it seems as though all is falling apart.

Wayne House says, “He is the cause of creation, and He is also the bond that holds it together.”

May you find peace and strength in the truth of this song from our childhood. May this song bring you back to a child-like belief and may you trust Jesus the way you did when you were a child.

He’s got the whole world in His hands,
He’s got the whole world in His hands,
He’s got the whole world in His hands,
He’s got the whole world in His hands.

We have nothing to worry or fear. Christ, even at the most microscopic level, is holding us together. Everything is held together in Christ!
