Your First 5 Minutes

How do you spend the first five minutes of your day?

My alarm (which is also my phone) goes off at 6:00 each morning. The first thing I do is reach to turn it off… or hit snooze… and then I lay in bed a little bit longer to browse Facebook, Pinterest, or check emails. And you know what?? It is such a HUGE waste of time! The embarrassing thing is that even though I realize what a bad habit it is, it’s my routine… so I just do it anyway. Or at least I did.

A few months ago, I was listening to the radio on my drive to work when the morning show host started talking about a new app. The First 5 is a free app created to encourage women to spend the first five minutes of their day in God’s Word. I instantly felt convicted about how I spent my first few minutes each morning. I downloaded the app and began using it the next morning. My alarm went off as usual (and I hit snooze as usual), but then I opened the app and read the short devotional for the day. As I finished reading, I realized there was additional material about the day’s topic so I set up a reminder in my phone to read it that evening.

And slowly but surely, day after day, I began to develop a new habit. Spending just five minutes in the Word each morning gave me a greater desire to spend more time in the Word throughout the day.

So… how do you spend the first five minutes of your day?

I’d encourage you to download and try The First 5 app, especially if you are a woman.  Men, if it proves to be a little too pink for you, I’m sure with a quick search you can find something more masculine.  Or if you have the discipline, simply make a commitment to not open any other app until after you open the YouVersion app (or your actual Bible).  Start a new reading plan tomorrow!  Trust me, those first five minutes make a difference for the rest of your day.
