We’ve sang “How He Loves” many times together. It’s a beautiful song, but have you ever thought about what you’re singing? Let’s break it down…
He is jealous for me. – Can God be jealous? Is righteous jealousy even a thing? Imagine the love of your life is always distracted or spending time with others when they could be with you. Would you not be jealous? Absolutely! But is this not what we do in our relationship with God? He yearns for our time, attention, and affection and experiences a righteous jealousy when our love is not in it’s proper place.
…loves like a hurricane, I am a tree, bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy. – Hurricanes are powerful and when you’re in a hurricane, you know it. In the presence of a hurricane, trees bend and sometimes even break. God’s love is powerful and when we truly understand His love, we bend under the weight of it. His love breaks strongholds and tears down walls. Standing in the midst of His love can be painful, as He doesn’t tolerate our sin and loves us too much to allow us remain the same.
When all of a sudden, I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory, and I realize just how beautiful you are, and how great your affections are for me… – Although His love may seem violent at times, ultimately His love always restores us. His glory and greatness overshadows any pain, discipline, or suffering we may experience. Suffering for His name sake is always worth it to experience the good He will use it to do.
Oh He loves us… He was willing to give everything to have a personal relationship with us that will go on for all eternity. Thank you, God, for loving me so!
We’ll sing this song along with 3 others this Sunday.
Thanks, Andrew! I love this song and understood its meaning but this explains it even more clearly. I look forward to singing it Sunday. – Jean
