When you heard that Southern Hills Christian Church had started Cub Scout Pack 2819, maybe you asked yourself, “Why?” The answer is simple: SoHills exists to make disciples who make disciples. Jesus outlined this vision in Matthew 28:19 when He said, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” (NLT) The church should be carrying out her mission seven days a week and not just on Sunday mornings.
In his proposal for City Station, our Lead Pastor, Shannon Lovelady, shared with the Carrollton City Council:
I believe that God is tired of seeing millions of dollars of mortar and steel sitting empty 6 days a week. I believe God is tired of “the church” gathering together for a couple of hours on Sunday and then going about their isolated lives the other 6 days a week. I believe God is tired of us spending money on programs, instruments, and sound systems for Sunday mornings, while we ignore the needs of the community in which we live. I believe God is tired of us handing out food and money so that we feel better about ourselves, yet we refuse to actually build relationships with our neighbors and get involved in their lives. I believe that God is tired of us blaming the issues of our nation, our state, and even our city on government, while the church is the one who abandoned her purpose. Our purpose is to be a beacon of hope, a place of refuge, a help in time of need and a catalyst for change – a city on a hill. That’s the church!
Every Monday night, Pack 2819 gathers on the SoHills campus to prepare young boys to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scouts. A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. These are character goals for every Scout. He does his best to live up to the “Scout Law” every day. While not always easy to do, a a Scout always tries.
Southern Hills has a growing pack with 56 Scouts and 11 adults serving each week to make this pack a reality. We believe this partnership creates another open door to our community where the church can be a catalyst for change in our youth. If your 1st through 5th grade boy is interested in joining scouts or if you would like to join in this partnership by serving, please contact Cathy Stembridge, Pack 2819 , at firstname.lastname@example.org
