Just tell them the…

One of my favorite shows on TV today is the “Last Ship.” Its a drama about a navy ship that is the last hope for a world that has been struck by a virus that has left most of the world dead. I know, I know, why watch a show about death and dying when I could just watch the evening news!

As the show continues to play out each week, the crew is faced with a different dilemma that they have to solve which leads to a new dilemma for next week. I imagine it will continue like this until they solve all the world’s problems or ratings drop, whichever comes first.

During one particular episode, I was intrigued by the response of the Captain that is so counter culture in light of today’s ethics. He and his crew where faced with a huge decision that could affect the fate of the nation and the First Officer ask the Captain “What shall we tell the crew?” His response was epic… “Just tell them the truth.”

The meaning of “truth” has escaped many in our society. The truth about a lie is that it kills the truth. Once you’re untruthful, it’s hard to convince folks you’re not lying and there develops a lack of trust that’s hard to get back.

This is a plague that’s hanging over our country today. When leaders of our country, supervisors at your work place, parents in your home lie, the truth dies, their words become void, and it has a catastrophic effect.

I’m reminded of the words of Romans 1:25 that says”They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.” (NLT)

That’s truly the plague, the virus, the sin that’s sweeping our nation and our world today.  We are trading the truth for a lie to benefit ourselves, which is in reality us worshiping our own faulty wisdom over God’s perfect wisdom.

So what do we do? How do we respond to the hate, the anarchy, the malice, the deception that we are exposed to on a regular basis?

Ephesian 4:15 says, “Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.” (NLT)

Speak the truth “in love”, so that we can “grow” in Christ, not because we are politically correct or because we are right or have the right to speak, but so that we through truth we may grow in Him.

A lie is just one of the many appliances used to spread sin. Christ, through our acceptance and obedience to Him, uses us as the last hope for a dying and lost world.

So what shall we tell them?  Just tell them the truth, in love, so that we may grow in Christ.

You “truth it in love” so well. I hope I will let Jesus take over so that He can do that through me. Thanks for the reminder.
